Upcoming event

January 30th - The fourth c,mm,n garage

The c,mm,n garage is a gettogether where everybody who is interested can join in on a brainstorming session and start creating a c,mm,n future image of our mobility. If you are interested, join in and think about open-source, mobility, cars and so on.

c,mm,n

c,mm,n is an open-source project to develop future personal auto mobility. Development and use of the car is embedded in an online community. The Netherlands Society for Nature and Environment (Stichting Natuur en Milieu) challenged the three Dutch technical universities of Delft, Eindhoven and Twente to develop a sustainable car concept for future urbanized Western societies.

AutoRai 2007

On March 27 at the AutoRAI 2007 (the Dutch biannual motorshow) the initiators launched their vision on mobility. They presented the mobility concept c,mm,n 1.0 with three actual size models. The models showed c,mm,n’s exterior, interior and electric drive and suspension.

C,mm,n 1.0

The c,mm,n 1.0 is a zero emission 2+2 family car, powered by a fuel cell system on hydrogen. On top of that c,mm,n is integrated with communication technology that optimizes personal mobility and enables cooperation between motorists. Thereby it provides real time information about traffic control and public transport services. With this concept the initiators want to boost the market for sustainable mobility.

c,mm,n is not a final product. It is continuously developed and improved. Designing an open source car has an impact on the way it is produced and used. Services will be central to the concept, opening many new possibilities. c,mm,n is not just a car but a community that allows people to take sustainable mobility into their own hands.

Our common future

Sustainable development means creating balance between the ecological, social and economic aspects of our existence. Because our demand for natural resources will more and more outweigh the offer, ecological sustainability will become economic sustainability.

In our vision technological developments and cooperation will enable a sustainable personal mobility. By 2020 the mobilist will no longer be a passive consumer but an active mobility producer.

So c,mm,n is also an invitation to contribute to the community of online developers and (future) users of the mobility concept. It gives an incentive to people and organisations to start cooperating in practical and sustainable solutions to user-friendly mobility.

c,mm,n 2.0

The three show models presented at the AutoRai 2007 were built to communicate the concept. The aim is to develop a riding model; the c,mm,n 2.0, to be demonstrated preferably at the AutoRAI in 2009.

c,mm,n is now an open-source platform on which the car is further developed by the three universities and any other enthusiast interested in future automobility. The effort now concentrates on developing a web platform to support development and on creating teams that take on development.

We contribute building a sustainable society in which environment, nature and landscape are treated with care and respect.

Technical University Delft

Sustainable development plays an important role in research and education at the Technical University Delft. TU Delft offers the master course Automotive Design. TU Delft worked on the development of the concept, the interior and the exterior design of the car.

Technical University Eindhoven

The Technical University Eindhoven designed a safe, sustainable, attractive and comfortable car. Besides the design, the TU Eindhoven delivered the power train and suspension for c,mm,n.

The University of Twente (UT)

Two departments from the Faculty Constructing Technical Sciences - the Centre for Transport Studies and the Department of Industrial Design - worked on the development of the car. The UT delivered the future concept for 2020 and the communication technology used in c,mm,n.
